Moon Walk

Moon behind sea oats

On a night walk, let the full moon light your way! Here are some tips:

  1. Wait for a full or near-full moon. A shining full moon turns an ordinary night into something special. Shadows stretch into strange long shapes. Silvery light touches everything with magic. It's a perfect time to go exploring.
  2. Head outside—invite an adult to join you. Just walk around your neighborhood or head off to a favorite wild place.  You could even go with a guide. Many nature centers, parks, and ski resorts hold special full-moon hikes—sometimes even on snowshoes!
  3. Try to get away from the city lights so the moon won't be outshone. Take a flashlight for safety, but keep it tucked in a pocket unless you really need it. The longer you stay out in the dark, the better your night vision will become—and the more you'll discover.
  4. Listen for hooting owls, wind in the trees, and other night sounds.
  5. Lie down and look up at the starry sky. Enjoy the calm and quiet.

Be glad that the full moon comes around every month, so you can do this again and again!
